You open your book, ready to delve into a world of knowledge. You study for a few hours and feel content with your progress. The next day, you realize that much of what you read has slipped from your memory.

It can be frustrating to invest significant time in reading only to retain little of the material. Effective studying isn’t about the duration spent reading; it’s about how you use that time.

Today, we will explore four methods to actively recall what you have studied actively, enhancing your understanding and retention.

 1. Summarization

Summarization involves condensing a larger body of text into a shorter version; capturing the essential elements while omitting unnecessary details. This technique makes the information easier to digest and understand.

After reading a passage or chapter, summarise it in your own words. Jotting down the key points you remember helps engrave them into your memory, making it easier to recall.

2. Note Taking

Effective note-taking entails capturing the essential points, ideas, and details in a concise and organized manner. Several techniques can enhance this process, including:

  • Cornell Method: Developed by Dr. Walter Pauk at Cornell University, this method involves dividing the page into three sections: a note-taking area (for main notes), a cue column (for critical points and questions), and a summary area (for summarising the notes on the page).
  • Mind Mapping: This technique involves creating diagrams to represent ideas and information. A central idea is placed in the middle of the page, with subtopics branching out radially and details added to each branch.

3. Self-Explanation

Verbalizing or writing out explanations of what you have read in your own words facilitates deeper processing.

After reading a passage or chapter, try explaining it as if you are speaking to an audience. Alternatively, write down the information in your own words. This practice helps reinforce your understanding and retention.

4. Mnemonic Devices

Using mnemonic strategies such as acronyms, rhymes, or visualization techniques can significantly aid in memory retention. Mnemonics have proven to be highly effective; particularly for last-minute recollection.
